How do Ovulation tests work?
We want you to feel confident using our products, so we include easy home ovulation test instructions with every purchase. In the instructions, we help explain when to take an ovulation test, how to read your OPK, and when you should begin testing for your LH surge in your menstrual cycle.
Our TGA-approved ovulation predictor kits allow you to detect your monthly LH Surge – the sudden and dramatic increase in Luteinizing Hormone (LH) in your urine just before you ovulate. LH is the hormone that facilitates ovulation (the release of the egg). When you detect your LH surge with an LH test, you know you are at your most fertile.
The only time to fertilise an egg is 6 to 24 hours after ovulation. This is why knowing your body’s cycle is extremely helpful in increasing your chances of becoming pregnant. We strive to provide a minimum of 20 months expiry on all ovulation strip tests (however, it is often more).
How to use an OPK
Collect a urine sample in a clean collection cup
Remove the ovulation strip from the sealed pouch
Dip the OPK into the sample to the max line, Hold it in the urine for 15 seconds, then remove and lay it on a flat surface.
OPKs have two lines: The control line reacts to urine to signal that the test is working correctly. This line is closest to the green handle. The second is the test line, which confirms if you are ovulating. A positive ovulation test is when the test line is dark or darker than the control line. A positive OPK indicates you will ovulate in the next 12 -48 hours, and you should plan on having sex during this time to increase your chances of falling pregnant.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do ovulation predictor kits work?
OPKs measure the amount of luteinising hormone (LH) in your urine. LH rises, signalling the ovaries to release a mature oocyte (egg). When you receive a positive ovulation test, it indicates you will ovulate in the next 12 to 36 hours.
When to take an ovulation test?
There is no wrong or right time to take an ovulation test. We recommend taking an OPK after 10 am and before 8 pm. This is because your urine can be more concentrated and potentially give a higher reading of LH. The main thing is to test at the same time each day.
How to read the ovulation test kit?
Using an ovulation test kit is easy; you only need to collect a urine sample in a clean cup. Dip the test kit to the max line and hold for 15 seconds; wait a few minutes for the indicator to appear. If the test line is darker than the control line, this is a positive ovulation test; you’re about to ovulate.
How long after a positive ovulation test strips are you fertile?
You have a 60-hour fertile window on average because eggs are only viable for about 24 hours after release. Once you have received a positive ovulation test, you will ovulate in 12- 36 hours.
Will an ovulation test be positive if pregnant?
In short, the answer is yes, an ovulation urine test can detect pregnancy, but it is nowhere near as accurate and not recommended by us as a way to test for pregnancy. You can use an OPK to test for pregnancy because the Luteinizing and pregnancy hormones hCG are molecularly similar. The only accurate method we suggest is using a home pregnancy test.
Do you offer bulk ovulation kits?
We offer our ovulation tests in our Fertility Test Kits, which have been tailored to suit your fertility journey; we offer a large range of kits that include; Basal Ovulation Thermometers, Conceive Plus fertility lube and prenatal vitamins, Pregnancy Tests and more, all combined into affordable Fertility Kits.
What is the best ovulation test?
Fertility2Family offers two types of test kits that can be performed at home. The midstream and the strip test have the same accuracy and ability to detect ovulation. We recommend the OPKs as they are more affordable, so you can test more often and not worry about missing your peak ovulation window.
Is it possible to miss the LH surge when using ovulation tests?
Yes, it is possible to miss the LH surge when using ovulation tests, including for women in Australia. The surge may last as little as a few hours, so if you’re not testing at the right moment, it could be missed. This is why some women prefer to try twice daily during their expected ovulation time to increase the likelihood of catching the surge.
Can an ovulation test be positive for several days?
An ovulation test could indeed show a positive result for several days. The LH surge typically lasts one to two days; if you test during this window, the result should be positive. This occurrence is common for women across the globe, including in Australia, given they’re trying at the right time.
How many days in a row should I test for ovulation?
It’s usually recommended for Australian women to test for ovulation once daily over several days. Start testing a few days before your expected ovulation and continue until you receive a positive result. The exact number of days can vary based on individual cycle lengths.
Can I get pregnant without an LH surge?
Pregnancy without an LH surge is unlikely because it is the LH surge that triggers ovulation, which is necessary for pregnancy. However, women in Australia and worldwide have several fertility treatments available to stimulate ovulation for those struggling with natural ovulation.
Can stress or lifestyle changes impact my ovulation test results?
Yes, stress and significant lifestyle changes can indeed impact ovulation test results. It’s the same for women in Australia and worldwide. Stress can affect your hormone levels, disrupting your menstrual cycle and potentially delaying ovulation. This could lead to a delay in the LH surge that ovulation tests detect.
Can ovulation tests help if I have irregular cycles?
For Australian women with irregular cycles, ovulation tests can assist, albeit with some added complexity. Because your ovulation window can be less predictable, you may need to use more tests throughout your cycle. However, these tests can still help identify the LH surge that signals ovulation.
Are ovulation tests useful for women with PCOS?
Women with PCOS in Australia can find ovulation tests helpful, but it’s essential to note that PCOS can cause elevated LH levels throughout the cycle. This might lead to false positives on the tests. Nonetheless, ovulation tests can still offer valuable insights into your cycle when combined with other methods like basal body temperature tracking.
