Test results and troubleshooting
Straight answers to common questions about ovulation tests, pregnancy tests, faint lines, and results that do not seem to match your timing. Home tests can guide what may be happening, but they do not explain every cause of a late period, irregular cycle, or unusual bleeding.
Visual guide to reading test results
Compare your test with the examples below, then check what the result may mean and what to do next.
Positive ovulation test
Both lines are present. The test line is as dark as or darker than the control line.
T line ≥ C lineLH Strip
MAX · Do not dip past MAX
LH surge detected. Ovulation is usually expected within the next 24 to 36 hours. Follow the reading time and testing steps for your product.
Positive pregnancy test
The control line is clear and a second coloured line appears in the test area within the stated reading time.
Faint or darker coloured linehCG Strip
MAX · Do not dip past MAX
Pregnancy hormone detected. A second coloured line that appears within the reading window should be treated as positive. If you tested very early and want to check again, repeat the test in 48 hours. If the result does not fit your timing, speak with your GP.
Invalid test
The control line is missing. The result is invalid regardless of what appears in the test window.
No control lineTest Strip
MAX · Do not dip past MAX
An invalid result usually means the test did not run properly. This can happen if the test was dipped past the MAX line, not held in urine for long enough, or not used exactly as directed. Retest with a new test and follow the instructions for that product.
Negative result or late evaporation mark
The control line is visible. A thin grey or colourless mark appears only after the reading window has passed.
Late grey or colourless lineTest
MAX · Do not dip past MAX
Negative result. Ignore any line that appears after the stated reading time. On pink-dye tests, a valid positive line should have colour and appear within the reading window. If you tested before your period was due, test again later. If your period is late and tests stay negative, wait up to a week and retest or speak with your GP.
Read results only within the stated time window. T = test line. C = control line. MAX = maximum dip line.
Still not sure?
Use the information below if your timing is hard to work out or the result does not seem to fit what you expected.
Negative ovulation tests all month
You may have started too late, tested only once a day, or missed a short LH surge. Start a little earlier next cycle and consider testing twice daily around your expected fertile window. If this keeps happening, or your cycles are very irregular, speak with your GP.
When to retest a pregnancy test
If you tested before your period was due, wait and test again later. If the result is negative on the first day after a missed period, repeat the test in one week if your period still has not started. If the result is unclear or your timing still does not make sense, speak with your GP.
Can diluted urine affect the result?
Yes. Drinking a lot before testing can dilute urine and make a line harder to detect. For pregnancy tests, first morning urine is often easier to read, especially early. Follow the instructions for your product and avoid over-hydrating before testing.
When to speak with your GP
Speak with your GP if your results remain confusing, your period is late with repeated negative tests, your cycles are very irregular, or you have bleeding or pain that does not seem normal. Home tests can be helpful, but they do not explain every cause of a late period or cycle change.
Common questions about reading a test
These quick answers cover the most common questions about reading the test correctly.
A missing control line usually means the result is invalid rather than the test is faulty. This can happen if the strip is dipped past the MAX line, not exposed to enough urine, or not used exactly as directed. Retest with a new test and follow the instructions closely.
If a second coloured line appears within the stated reading window, treat it as positive. Early pregnancy lines can be light, but a valid positive line should still have colour and appear on time.
Read the test only within the time window stated in the instructions for your product. Results checked too early or too late can be misleading.
For pregnancy tests, Fertility2Family early-detection pregnancy tests can be used up to 6 days before your period is due, but the most accurate time to test is from the day your period is due. First morning urine can make an early result easier to detect. For ovulation tests, start a few days before you expect ovulation and follow the timing instructions for your product. A positive ovulation result usually means ovulation is likely within 24 to 36 hours.
Returns and support
If you think there is an issue with your order, the information below explains what can be returned, what to do if an item is lost, and how to contact us.
An invalid or misread result is not always a faulty product. Check the troubleshooting section and the instructions for your product before requesting a return.
Change of mind returns
Because these are personal-use items, we cannot accept change of mind returns for opened test kits. This does not affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
Lost parcels
If tracking has not updated for 5 business days after lodgement, contact support with your order number. We will review the tracking, raise it with the carrier where needed, and email you with the next steps.
Damaged or faulty items
If an item arrives damaged, is genuinely faulty, or does not meet a consumer guarantee, we will assess the issue and provide a remedy in line with the Australian Consumer Law. Depending on the problem, this may include a repair, replacement, or refund.
How to start a return
Email our team with your order number, a clear photo of the issue, and a short description of the problem. We may need to inspect the item before confirming the outcome. If a return is approved, we will email the next steps and provide return instructions or a prepaid label where required.
Payments
Visa, PayPal, Afterpay, Zip Pay, and bank deposit are available at checkout.
