What is my cervical mucus telling me?
Clear, stretchy mucus signals rising oestrogen and your most fertile days. It can appear without ovulation, so pair it with LH tests or BBT to confirm.

How this tool works
Why fertile mucus can appear without ovulation
Rising oestrogen before ovulation turns mucus clear and stretchy. Falling oestrogen and rising progesterone dry it up afterwards.
The diary records what you observe each day, shows the pattern across the cycle, and flags when fertile mucus appears without a matching LH surge.

Cervical mucus patterns this diary records
The observations this diary organises across a cycle, and what each can and cannot tell you.
| Observation | Typical position in the cycle | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Dry or no noticeable mucus | Often after bleeding ends | Does not prove low fertility on that day |
| Sticky or pasty | Early in the cycle | Does not rule out an approaching fertile window |
| Creamy or lotion-like | Approaching the fertile window | Does not identify an ovulation day |
| Watery | Within the fertile window for many people | Does not confirm an egg was released |
| Clear and stretchy, egg-white | Usually closest to ovulation | Does not confirm ovulation occurred |
| Changed after the peak | After the fertile window | Retrospective only; it cannot predict forward |
Mucus changes are a cycle sign, not a test. They can be altered by infection, semen, lubricants, medicines and hormonal contraception. Fertile-looking mucus can occur in a cycle where ovulation does not happen, so this diary records observations rather than confirming ovulation. Significant pelvic pain with fever, heavy bleeding with dizziness, or feeling acutely unwell needs assessment now.

Timing and reading rules come from the instructions supplied with the test you are using.

- Read the result at 5 minutes.
- A mark appearing after 10 minutes does not count.

A diary that preserves uncertainty
Record what you observe without forcing mucus and LH to agree
Cervical mucus can support fertility timing, while an LH test records a separate hormone signal. This diary keeps both visible, labels confounded observations and preserves symptom-free days and missing data.
Cycle signs in context
A useful fertility diary records more than “egg-white mucus”
Cervical mucus changes across the cycle
Many people notice drier or stickier patterns after bleeding, wetter or more slippery observations near the fertile window and thicker or cloudier mucus after ovulation. Individual cycles vary, and a single appearance cannot confirm that an egg was released.
LH and mucus answer different questions
An LH test detects a urine hormone signal. Mucus records a physical observation influenced by hormones and local conditions. A positive LH result and a mucus highlight may occur together, on different days or not both be recorded. The diary should preserve that difference rather than manufacture agreement.
Confounders matter
Semen, arousal fluid, lubricant, vaginal medicines and bleeding can resemble or alter mucus. The diary keeps these observations in the record but does not count them as an unconfounded highlight. Illness, fever and medicines remain visible as context.
Symptoms should not be hidden inside a fertility label
Offensive odour, unusual colour, itching, burning, pain, fever or bleeding between periods or after sex can require clinical review. The diary does not relabel those features as fertile mucus.
A record is useful even when the pattern is unclear
Irregular, absent or changing patterns can still support a GP or fertility appointment. The exported record shows what was observed, what may have affected it and where the evidence is incomplete.
How the diary treats each signal
Wet or slippery sensation
Can support fertile-window timing when the observation is not confounded, but does not prove ovulation.
Watery or clear and stretchy appearance
Can be highlighted as a fertility sign only when the diary’s visible exclusion rule is met.
Positive LH result
Records the device result separately and does not convert it into a confirmed ovulation date.
Symptoms or confounders
Remain visible in the export and prevent a misleading unconfounded highlight where appropriate.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I check cervical mucus?
- Wipe with clean tissue before urinating, or check at the vaginal opening. Note colour, stretch and feel.
- Can I have fertile mucus and not ovulate?
- Yes. Oestrogen can rise without a surge, especially in PCOS or after stopping the pill.
- Does semen or arousal fluid affect it?
- Both can mimic watery mucus for a day. Record them separately.
- What if I never see egg-white mucus?
- Some people do not. Watery mucus is also fertile. Use LH tests to confirm timing.
